Why We Love Him

"As far back as I can remember, I’ve wanted to be a gangster,” states unapologetically Henry Hill (Ray Liotta) centered in a blood-tinged frame from Martin Scorsese’s murder ballad ode to Mafia foot soldiers, Goodfellas. Substitute “filmmaker” for gangster, and that is a deep abiding confession by Scorsese, as he became not only our greatest filmmaker but Cinema’s greatest disciple—the Spectator and the Creator are One, mixing an unrelenting devotion to Form ala Minnelli with a destabilizing plunge into the Energy of the personal ala Cassavetes. Who are we without Johnny Boy, Alice Hyatt, Travis Bickle, Jake La Motta, Rupert Pupkin, Judas, Tomm?
