Why We Love Her
Claire Denis will allow no flaw of human nature to go unchecked. Fools in love, the lingering trappings of colonialism, and the boundaries of scientific morality are just some of the topics addressed in her films set in familiar countries, and even the expanse that exists beyond Earth. High Life and Beau Travail are my favorites in particular, both showing me a harshness, and a cruel love that I could never find in my own small reality.
